Scott Simon talks to
Shuler about playing Jud and his childhood in Georgia where his
ballet director mom & football player dad encouraged him to
follow dual paths of athletics and the arts. The two art forms,
athletics and dance, never really separated in our household. My
mom actually would teach our football team stretch classes before
a game, and she would do shows and programs at school where she
would take the movements of athletes and incorporate them into
dance....she was trying to say to kids 'there isn't a difference.
You're just as much of an athlete to be able to do this on stage
as on the playing field.'
Shuler talks in depth about all of his
shows from Phantom onwards and sings a brief part of Phantom
in German!
A fun chat about Van
Helsing, Hugh Jackman
- and a new addition to the family!
Oh, and Shuler sings Christina Aguilera's Beautiful!
Shuler talks with Steve Malzberg about
Young Frankenstein, working with Mel Brooks, and the
effects of the Broadway stagehands 19 day strike. (Thanks
to the show's producer, Jenna Strollo, for permission to use this
interview)
Jane Waldman asks Shuler about
starring in Mel Brooks' hit musical - and the confusion his
playing a monster causes for his children!
