The Drama
League announced today that John Lithgow, star of Sweet Smell of Success,
would be Master of Ceremonies at the 68th Annual Awards Luncheon to be
held on Friday, May 10 at 1PM at the Grand Hyatt, 42nd Street and Park
Avenue. Kathleen Chalfant and Marian Seldes will serve as Honorary
Co-chairmen of the event.
The Drama League also announced today the following awards:
The Unique
Contribution to Theatre Award will be given to Julia Hansen, recently
named Chairman of The Drama League, after having served as its President
for 21 years. Mrs. Hansen is being honored for her extraordinary
stewardship of the organization, which grew nationwide and tenfold during
her tenure, and for her founding of The Drama League Directors Project,
the nation’s preeminent training program for emerging directors, whose
alumni include Christopher Ashley, Mark Brokaw, Michael Mayer, Diane
Paulus and John Rando.
The 2002 Distinguished Achievement Award in Musical Theatre will be
presented to Elaine Stritch, now starring in her one-woman show, Elaine
Stritch at Liberty, which was brought from The Public Theatre to Broadway
this season by overwhelming critical acclaim and public demand. Ms.
Stritch is being honored both for her work creating and performing this
autobiographical evening, and for the career it explores and explains,
including her many signature performances on Broadway and in London’s
West End, in such productions as Pal Joey, Sail Away, Company and Show
Boat.
The Drama
League’s Distinguished Performance Award will be announced at the event.
It is the nation’s oldest acting honor, first presented in 1935,
predating the Tony® Awards by twelve years. In recent years, The Drama
League has added annual awards for distinguished new productions (play,
musical, revival) and for career achievement in the theatre. They will
also be announced that day.
The Drama League’s
national membership votes for the performance and production awards in the
days preceding the event. This year’s winner of the Distinguished
Performance Award will join many past recipients of that award and a dais
lined with actors who have created the season’s most memorable
performances on and Off-Broadway. All of the stars on the dais will be
given the chance to speak during the luncheon.
Proceeds from the Annual Awards Luncheon support The Drama League
Directors Project. The
Drama League is devoted to supporting and strengthening theatre in
America: by broadening and stimulating the audience for quality theatre
and by developing emerging talents for careers in the theatre.
