23 May : Almost time for Shuler's next play The Guardsman, which will run at the Kennedy Center, Washington from 25 May - 23 June. 

And looking much further ahead, the great news is that Shuler will be back next year at New York's City Center Encores!, this time as Tony in Frank Loesser's The Most Happy Fella. The dates for your diary are 2 - 6 April 2014, full details of all the 2014 Encores! shows can be found on Playbill 

21 May : More congratulations to Shuler, who has been given an OBIE Award for Best Performance to add to the Awards and Nominations already received for his marvellous performance in The Whale!

10 May : Shuler shows off his Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a play (The Whale) at Theatermania.

7 May : The news just gets better and better! - Shuler has been cast in a double bill of Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter plays alongside - wait for it - Sir Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and Billy Crudup, no less! Waiting for Godot and No Man's Land will play in rep at New York's Cort Theatre from 26 October for 14 weeks. Playbill has all the details.

6 May : The Whale scored a hat trick at the Lucille Lortel Awards which were announced yesterday! ~ Outstanding Play (Samuel D Hunter), Outstanding Costume Design (Jessica Pabst), ~ and Outstanding Lead Actor for Shuler!! Warmest congratulations to all three!

Also, tonight Shuler will take part in the annual spring gala of Playwrights Horizons, the company which presented The Whale.

1 May : What an incredible achievement by Shuler and The Whale in this year's awards nominations!! As well as Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle (see News 30 April and 24 April) Shuler has also been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor by the Lucille Lortel Awards, together with Jessica Pabst for costume design and The Whale for outstanding play. The awards will be handed out on 5 May.

And! - Shuler has received a Distinguished Performance Award nomination from the Drama League, alongside an Outstanding Play nom for The Whale. Presentations take place on 17 May. 

Warmest congratulations to Shuler and to everyone involved with The Whale, and btw, if you haven't already seen the video on the making of Jessica Pabst's fat suit for Shuler in the play, do take a look at it here

And while I'm playing catch-up, here is the most marvellous video from this year's Shuler Hensley Awards which could be described as "wicked" or even "wizard" and is not to be missed!

 

30 April : More congrats to Shuler, who has been nominated by the Drama Desk as Outstanding Actor in a Play - The Whale - alongside Mimi Lien who receives a nom for Outstanding Set Design. Playwright Samuel D Hunter has already been voted a Special Award for "excellence and significant contribution to the theater." The awards ceremony takes place on 19 May.

29 April : Good news! You can view the entire PBS Carousel concert with Shuler as Jigger Craigin at pbs.org here but please note that it will only be available until this coming Friday, 3 May.

24 April : Congratulation to Shuler who has just been nominated in the Outer Critics Circle "Outstanding Actor in a Play" category for his brilliant performance in The Whale. Also, playwright Samuel D Hunter has been nominated for the John Gassner Award. The winners will be announced on 13 May.

And don't forget! - the New York Philharmonic concert version of Carousel in which Shuler played Jigger Craigin will air on PBS this coming Friday night, 26 April at 9pm EST.

17 April : Just a reminder that tomorrow is the night of this year's annual Shuler Hensley Awards which will be broadcast live at 8pm on WSB-TV's sister station Me.TV. There are great articles about Shuler and the Awards at the Atlanta Examiner and the Marietta Daily Journal.

30 March : Seems Prince of Broadway, in which Shuler was to have appeared, has been put on the back burner once again. The show, celebrating the career of Hal Prince, was to have played Broadway later this year. Read more at Playbill.   

Earlier this week Shuler co-hosted the announcement of the nominations for this year's Shuler Hensley Awards. The Awards ceremony will be held on 18 April and broadcast live on tv. Keep up-to-date via the official Awards Site and the Facebook link at the top of this page! 

22 March : Shuler will play the Critic in The Guardsman at Kennedy Center, Washington from 25 May to 23 June. The play has been adapted from the original by Richard Nelson, who wrote That Hopey Changey Thing and Sweet & Sad which Shuler appeared in at the Public Theatre, NYC. 20 March : "Have the rare opportunity to work with Tony-Award Winner Shuler Hensley in a unique retreat-style workshop on April 6 or April 7!" Playbill has all the details!

30 Jan : Shuler will play bad guy Jigger Craigin in a concert version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel at the Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, NYC from 27 February to 2 March. See the New York Philharmonic website for details of times and tickets. Great news is that the concert will also be broadcast on PBS "Live from Lincoln Center" 26 April at 9pm EST. 27 Jan : A couple of interesting links for Shuler's upcoming show Fiorello! - a photo gallery of the cast at Playbill, and a great rehearsal video at Broadway.com. The show, which is about Fiorello LaGuardia who was mayor of New York from 1934-1945, opens on Wednesday at New York's City Center and plays until Sunday 3 Feb. 

13 Jan 2013 : Shuler is to appear in the New York City Center "Encores!" production of Fiorello!, a 1959 musical by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick about Mayor LaGuardia. The show runs from 30 January to 3 February. Lots more info at Playbill and Theatermania.

 

27 Dec 2012 : As 2012 draws to a close, Shuler's performance in The Whale features amongst contributors to Playbill's Picks of the year's unforgettable theatre experiences. Matt Blank gives "Special mention to Shuler Hensley's devastatingly beautiful turn as a 600-pound man which should win every award in existence" and David Gewirtzman feels that the play "was perhaps most memorable for Shuler Hensley's physically and emotionally draining performance as a 600-pound man." Caught up in Les Miz movie fever? Then you'll be interested in this interview with Hugh Jackman from the New York Post in which Hugh reveals that he first saw the show on Broadway 12 years ago and that it was Shuler who suggested they should check it out!

20 Dec : Shuler gave his last performance in The Whale on Saturday 15th. The new play at Playwrights Horizons is The Great God Pan and Shuler is one of its opening night guests pictured in Theatermania's Photo Flash

13 Dec : STOP PRESS : Tonight on The Insider, CBS, 7pm, there will be a feature on Shuler and his "Whale" fat suit.

11 Dec : We have a real treat today - a fantastic 2.5 min video of Shuler as Charlie in The Whale, reciting a book report about Moby Dick, which has been written by his daughter. The video is the latest in a new theatre series from the New York Times, and can be enjoyed here in fabulous close-up!

23 Sept : More information about Shuler's appointment as Artist-in-Residence at Kennesaw State University here. And an article about the success of the Cobb Energy Center, GA mentions the Shuler Hensley Awards which are held there, together with a photo of Shuler rehearsing for a performance. 

19 Sept : Shuler is gearing up for his next play The Whale at Playwrights Horizons, NYC, October 12 - November 25. Playbill features a photo gallery of the cast here.

And more great news - Shuler has been appointed Artist in Residence at Kennesaw State University, GA and will be teaching workshops to students there. Don't miss a terrific video of one of these workshops here.

By the way, Shuler's character (Tim) won't feature in this year's play about the Apple family by Richard Nelson at the Public Theater, NYC but will hopefully be back in next year's installment!

22 July : Breaking news! Shuler will star in the New York première of The Whale at Playwrights Horizons, October - November. More about this on Playbill and the Playwrights' website

1 July : Shuler is now set to appear in The Elephant Man at this year's Williamstown Festival. He will play Ross, Bishop How and Snork. The play by Bernard Pomerance runs from 25 July to 5 August. Tickets and more info at the Festival website

27 June : Shuler narrates Schoenberg's A Survivor From Warsaw at the San Francisco Davies Symphony Hall, today through Saturday 30 June. Full details here

14 June : Don't miss the great new feature from Playbill - Their Favorite Things Tony Winner and Silence! 10 May : Following on from Ghost Brothers of Darkland County (which closes this coming weekend) Shuler will temporarily join the cast of Off-Broadway's Silence! The Musical, starring as Hannibal Lecter no less! All the info at Playbill.

29 April : Shuler and his cast mates from Sweet & Sad are delighted to have been given a special Drama Desk Ensemble Award for Acting, for being "among New York's best actors, who came together as one unforgettable stage family." Warmest congratulations to them all!

25 April : Attention all you budding Juds, Curlys and Laureys in and around Manhattan! The Tony Awards Film Series will be screening a special Sing-Along version of the London film of Oklahoma! Starring (of course!) Shuler, Hugh Jackman, Maureen Lipman and Josefina Gabrielle, it will take place at 2.45pm on 13 May at the Paley Center, West 52 Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. 20 March : Almost time for the annual Shuler Awards! This year's awards (the 4th) will be held on Tuesday 17 April and the nominees will be announced live on WSB TV2 at 12pm on Tuesday 3 April.   

And don't forget that Shuler will soon be starring in Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, which begins performances at the Alliance Theater, Atlanta on 4 April. 

8 Jan 2012 : PBS has announced that The Thomashefskys concert will be broadcast on Thursday 29 March as part of their Great Performances series. Playbill also has details of other shows in the series that you might be interested in.

29 Dec 2011 : I'm sorry to report that Shuler's Bad Boys of Broadway concert has been cancelled. He will now take part in Broadway Spectrum at Northport.

4 Dec : Shuler is currently workshopping Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.

Theatermania confirms that The Thomashefskys will indeed be broadcast by PBS next year, but no date seems to be available as yet.

And look out for not one but two more installments in Richard Nelson's stories about the Apple family, previously seen in That Hopey Changey Thing and Sweet and Sad at the Public Theater, New York. The 3rd episode will be set on Election Night 2012, followed by a 4th episode on the 50-year anniversary of the death of JFK in 2013.

27 Sept : Next month will at last see the staging of the Rogers and Hammerstein concerts originally scheduled for last January, starring Shuler together with Kate Baldwin, Jonathan Tunick and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Tickets and more info here

11 Sept : Sweet and Sad opens at the Public Theater today to coincide with the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

9 Sept : Shuler will be amongst the stars taking part in the Westport Country Playhouse Gala on 19 September. See here for more details and how to book.

8 Aug :  The 2011Shuler Hensley Awards will be shown this coming Friday, 12 August, at 8pm on WSB-TV2 Atlanta. 

Tickets for Sweet and Sad are now on sale at the Public Theater. The first performance will be on 6 September.

Before that, Shuler will take part in a staged reading of Bus Stop - more details here

23 May : Shuler will play "the mysterious bad guy" in Stephen Sommer's new movie Odd Thomas, currently being filmed. Ooh, intriguing!

9 March : This year's Shuler Hensley Awards are scheduled to take place on 26 April!

1 March : The Philadelphia Enquirer reports that Michael Tilson Thomas' Thomashefskys (which Shuler has just performed in, and will reprise in NYC in April) is to be filmed for PBS - great news for those unable to make it to the shows!

18 Jan : More info on Buddy's Tavern from Playbill. Readings of this new musical are currently taking place, with Shuler in the lead role. And more on the upcoming Thomashefsky concerts here

9 Jan 2011 : This month's Rodgers and Hammerstein concert in Detroit has been rescheduled for October because of an ongoing strike by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. No further details as yet on the DSO website.
