Regina
Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts,
Washington DC Concert dates :
Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th March, 2005 "A semi-staged concert version of Marc Blitzstein's soaring musical drama Regina, hailed as "a remarkable achievement" by the New York Times when it premiered on Broadway in 1949. Adapted from Lillian Hellman's classic play The Little Foxes, this distinctively American opera chronicles a rich Southern family circa 1900 torn apart by greed. Juxtaposing operatic lyricism with spirituals, ragtime, blues and Dixieland, this new production of Regina will be conducted by Steven Mercurio and directed by Tony nominee Lonny Price (A Class Act) on the centennial of Blitzstein's birth." Cast (featuring a mix of musical theatre and opera stars) :
Regina is set in spring 1900 at the Giddens home in Bowden, Alabama. REVIEWS : The voices are unassailable and some of the acting quite polished, especially by Shuler Hensley as the sickly husband Regina uses and discards. (Peter Marks, Washington Post) LINKS : Kennedy
